sits a man
in awe of
the miracle
flowing through his hands
his fingers at play
in the stream
that refracts the sunlight
and seems lit from within
as the last amber drip
falls to the concrete sidewalk
he rearranges
himself & his clothes
waits for the bus
to arrive
It was SB1070 that brought Mary Hope Whitehead Lee to Phoenix in 2010. She is an active member of the Cardboard House Press Cartonera Collective and, in addition to writing poetry and learning translation, she embroiders and creates hand-cut collage. Locally, her work has appeared in Palabrona vol. 1, and the inaugural issue of Little Somethings. Most recently, with the assistance of Ryan Greene, she published Nuclear Waste, a deeply personal exploration in poetry and collage of the lived consequences of family violence. The cardboard covered book is available for sale at Palabras Bilingual Bookstore.
